Sun protection factor! Your Essential Guide About SPF

But what with those numbers? The sun protection factor, or SPF, ranges from minimum of 2 to a maximum of 50 times higher. Most of us understand that the fund has something to do with providing protection against ultraviolet rays the sun. But beyond that, the number is a mystery.

What does SPF mean?

The SPF is a comparison of time it takes before the skin begins to redden with and without sunscreen. In addition, SPF refers only to UVB rays, which the tanning, but also cause burns.

For example, if you need 20 minutes to an individual's skin to burn without sun protection, then an SPF of 15 means that when applied, that person may remain in the sun 15 times longer, or up to 5 hours without worry of burning. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection it offers, but only to a certain extent. Higher FPS to 15 provide only small increments of additional protection. And that's the theory behind the SPF.

Actually, however, whether protection SPF becomes less effective when not evenly applied, a person enters the water and a person sweats. Both water and sweat decreases the effectiveness of the product, that is extremely important for sun protection reapply frequently.

Besides reapplying, for maximum effectiveness of the first application should spend about 20 minutes before going out in the sun. Doing so allows sufficient time for the product to fully absorb into the skin. It also ensures that you will protected in the moment you step outside.

SPF is right for me?

For most people, sunscreen with a protection factor Solar 15 provides adequate protection provided they reapply often. However, those with sensitive skin will benefit from a higher SPF. People they are light skinned with light hair color or red or traveling to high altitude or tropical destinations selected will also benefit from a higher SPF. People with darker skin in general, do not burn as easily and need only a mild SPF. By choosing to remember that a higher SPF does not offer more protection – it offers protection longer.

Other Sun protection products

Self tanning products and bronzers are safer ways to color of their skin because skin not exposed to UV radiation over time damage the skin cells. These products do not offer sun protection unless the label otherwise the inclusion of a sun protection factor. But remember that a sun protection factor corresponds to a period of time and therefore, even if the product offers protection against the sun, it will not last until you wash the product out in a few days.

Do not get confused between SPF, UPF, and EPF. As explained above SPF (sun factor) refers to the sunscreen, the UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) refers to bathing suits sun protection, UV protective clothing and sun protection hats, EPF factor (eye protection) refers to sunglasses. The next time you buy your sunscreen products be sure to ask for SPF, the UPF, EPF or certification.
