One disc is given an initial speed of 6 m / s. He stops at a distance of 9m. What is the coefficient of kinetic friction?
In a game of shuffleboard (played on a horizontal surface), a disk is given an initial speed of 6 m / s. It slides a distance of 9.0 m before coming to rest. What is the coefficient kinetic friction between the disc and the surface? Can someone please explain step by step how to solve this and the equations used? Thank you!
The first working formula is V ^ 2 – Vo ^ 2 = 2a where VF = Final velocity = 0 (when you stop the disc) Vo = initial velocity = 6 m / sec. (given) a = acceleration s = stopping distance = 9 m (given) Substituting appropriate values, 0 – 6 ^ 2 = 2 (a) (9) a = – a = 36/18 – 2 m / s ^ 2 Note the negative sign attached to acceleration. It simply means that the disc is slowed by friction between it and the surface. Using Newton's 2nd law of motion F = ma where F = net force acting on the disk = μmg μ = coefficient of friction m = mass of the disk g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m / s ^ 2 (constant) and since F = ma, then again μmg = Ma note the negative sign is attributed to "F = – μmg" as this implies that the direction of the frictional force is opposite the motion of the disk. From "M" appears on both sides of the equation, simply cancel and the above becomes – μ (9.8) = -2 and solving for μ μ = 0.204 Hope this helps.
