Blue Mens
[New Orleans, July 29, 2008] At the turn of the twentieth century, as the plantations of the palace and down the Mississippi River became a memory, thousands of former workers migrated to New Orleans, like immigrants, sailors, hunters, gamblers, con artists, researchers and musicians. This convergence with the native population scenario who bore the free spirit of Jazz and opened a new frontier.
The Eagle's Hall, built in 1875 and known as the "delivery room" Jazz had its roof blew during the storm of 2005. The second and third floors were destroyed, but the original tin ceiling tile and ceramic floors survived Spanish and blues, the spirit and all that jazz re-ignites every Tuesday night lit by the New Orleans Music Hall of Fame and Museum Blues and Jazz Band, Guitar Slim, Jr., a showman extradonaire.
The son of Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones, Jr. 's first release earned him a Grammy nomination. The Tuesday night, Jr., along with Blues Boy George on guitar, Anthony on bass and Milton on drums, received several standing ovations during his three and a half years delivery hours nonstop, BB King, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ray Charles, Motown, Marvin Gaye, Prince, gospel and more during a private party at the Eagle, which was organized as a thanksgiving service by Pastor John E. Pierre of the Living Witness Church of God in Christ on Oretha C. Haley Blvd, three minutes drive from the Eagle Room at 201 South Rampart Street.
Pastor Pierre and many in the heart of the central city, once a haven for drug dealers and prostitutes, demonstrated their gratitude and love by two teams of volunteers who had come to work in the July heat together with the recovery of addicts to the demolition of the former to achieve new opportunities for homeless men before they commit to a year long residential camp known as Nehemiah Restoration Project, only one of many community outreach programs established by the Living Witness.
The teams of committed Christians came on their own money from the Church crossings Clermont, Florida and Cedar Brook of Wisconsin. It was the first mission trip for cross-ups, but some of Wisconsin were on their sixth working pilgrimage and eighth of community service a 2005 storm that wrecked havoc. The volunteers all work alongside men in recovery who are now building a barbershop and beauty salon next to the Living Witness Church of God.
The real Pierre Pastor patient informed me, "The bottom line for us is to get families together and strengthening the family. We found that the effects of Hurricane Katrina have become a source of unity. The churches in this neighborhood met in this area became a ghost town. My family had been evacuated to Houston and it was not until October 2005 that my Deacon and I were able to return through the back door, coming through the West Bank, [the area was still under Marshall Law and no freedom of movement was allowed]. It's stinky smelly around the block, the roof had been destroyed when a tree fell on him. There was no telephone and electricity, but still no water.
"I received a call from the Federal Government Health and Human Services and was informed that a pre-Katrina grant Compassionate Capitol had been granted. I forgot everything!
"Half of our church members have been displaced, decent and affordable housing is still at speed. Then you must double-edged sword tourism and convention refers to reclaim New Orleans is back for a fake image. The French Quarter and St. Charles areas where tourists go, did not receive much damage, but where people live, the community that is New Orleans is stuck in a time warp. Our Government has not fulfilled its promises. "
After the levees broke and President Bush spoke in Jackson Square, was lit by a generator, and when it was over, boom, boom, went the lights again!
Ask not what our government will do for the people by virtue of which serves the spirit of New Orleans, but what the people of these United States can do to help them heal.
