Watch Blue
When my daughter was young, I loved watching Blue's Clues with her. All Steve sang catchy songs that all sound cute little Blue … I loved it. But one thing that always bothered me about it. There is a line in the ending song that says, "We can do anything … we want to do!"
It means that in children and say "I can do what you want, for example, rob a store, my mom Sass, moon, the mailman …"
The who were in the meaning of this song is because they are so smart – the smartest of the smart, that you can! Want to be a brain surgeon — Yes, of course you can! Want to be a superstar – Sure, going to be a diva! Just believe and strive and you can!
I've always been concerned by the idea of bringing our children to believe he can become anything they want to be, because frankly, I think the Lord has an individual plan for each of us.
I am no intention of sounding like a killjoy, a cold water off a dream … I encourage my children. I love to see flourish their talents, developing niches. I understand that the Lord has placed the individual marks in each of my children. Not all have the same likes and dislikes. They will not have the same talents.
Like all mothers, I think my children are smart and strive in everything they do. But I also believe that it is unwise to send the message without teaching Steve and Blue to pray for the Lord for guidance.
My daughter wants to be an artist when I grow up. She is already underway. My older son wants to be Spider-man. Obviously, we a problem there … But he will find his niche and passion.
But if I look at my children and pray for guidance in directing them as they grow, I will come to understand that these wishes are there for a reason and a flower on the actual day of calling the Lord has prepared for them.
Each season of American Idol opens with a sample of people who were told they could be anything I wanted to be and that everyone wanted to be famous singers and celebrities. There are many who deserve to think possible. There are plenty of others who have lied and encouraged to follow a dream that is really a nightmare. They want the fame and his own glory. They are not looking to reflect the glory of the Lord. Are headed down the wrong path. When told the truth by Simon, who are shattered. They are angry. Many are flat-out challenging and yet refuse to believe that they are not made for it.
It is painful to see. And I made the same mistake too … not only on national television and not aspiring to be a celebrity.
Similarly, we sometimes can discourage a child from what the Lord does not want to do. We've all heard stories of parents trying to dissuade a child from a race that seems risky or unattractive or below them.
But really, if what the Lord calls to do, not the Lord's will take care of them?
I want my children to grow and be fulfilled. Knowing that they are pursuing the dream of the Lord, not the world, has given them. That's what makes me proud … not as much to do, or known or marry.
