Chen Xiaowang

The greatest Martial Arts legends lived before video existed – teachers who allegedly could knock down opponents with their chi or, with a flick of a finger, you can delete a big rival of twenty feet.
One legend tells the story of a young student who wanted to learn a form (also called "kata") from a master. According to legend, the master performed the sequence of movements once she returned to the student, saying: "I will be back in a year. At that time, should have mastered this form! "
A year later, the teacher and the student returned, in fact, master the moves. And do not even have a DVD player!
In the 35 years I have studied and taught martial arts, I've never seen anyone – not even visual learners – to memorize more than a couple of movements a way to see once. In 1978, however, when I bought my first VCR, it opened a new world of martial Arts Training for visual learners like me.
Is not it wonderful to see videos of some of the great, legendary martial arts masters. Imagine if you could see the creator of Tai Chi, Chen Wangting, perform his movements hundreds of years ago in the Chen Village. Legendary Hsing-I master Sun Lu Tang, the creator of Sun Tai Chi, lived until the 1930s but, Unfortunately, not long enough for camcorders and VCRs to be invented.
Since the 1980s, martial artists from all over the world have been recording themselves on video. The rise of the VCR and DVD gave us the opportunity to stop a teacher in his tracks or slo-mo the movements like never before.
I study and teach the three Chinese internal martial arts: Tai Chi, Hsing-I Chuan, and Bagua. Body mechanics for these arts are incredibly complicated. It takes years of study to do them correctly.
I've studied in person with some of the best teachers of tai chi – Xiaowang Grandmaster Chen and his brother, the Grand Master Chen Xiaoxing, his students master Ren Guangyi and Chen Bing, and American students and disciples. I have a collection of his videos and there is an almost total lack of instruction right in them. Not all great teachers are great teachers. My best teachers have been Americans – students of these teachers – who questioned below the surface and explained, in plain English, the meaning of the movements.
Body mechanics must be taught clearly a student to learn properly, and most teachers to show the mechanics of video without teaching the details. And that's the problem.
An effective martial arts video requires a teacher who knows how to teach through video – with specific visual detail. Most teachers just do repetitive movements at different angles with very little instruction in body mechanics. Without proper body mechanics can not do the interior art. Some of the best videos I've seen have been by martial artists teachers who were not considered, but were great teachers and knew how to use the video.
If you try to learn martial arts in the video, find a way get feedback on their techniques and movements from a qualified teacher. We all believe that we are like a great teacher, when we perform, but the reality usually different from the self-image in our heads.
Use a video camera to record their movements and then compare them with video studying. Be brutally honest with yourself. Ask a friend to see both videos and tell you where you're making a mistake. Is your body really does what the instructor is doing?
Some of my students living in other parts of the world, private videos posted on YouTube for me to see and critique. Sometimes I make video replies to show the mistakes they are doing.
Nothing can replace face teaching, but if you live in a town without people who teach the arts you want, the development of video and the Internet has given anyone the opportunity to do training like no other time in history.

The Mao Case (Inspector Chen) $4.99 Chief Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Department is the head of the Special Case group and is often put in charge of those cases that are considered politically “sensitive” since, as a rising party cadre, he’s regarded by many as reliable. But Inspector Chen, though a poet by inclination and avocation, takes his job as a policeman very seriously, despite the pressures put upon him from within and without, and is unwilling to compromise his principles as a policeman in favor of political expedience. However, after the new Minister of Public Security insists that Chen personally take on a ‘special assignment’, an investigation already begun by Internal Security, he may no longer be able to resist those pressures. The party, increasingly leery of international embarrassment, is unhappy about two recent books that place Mao in a bad light. Now, Jiao, the granddaughter of an actress who was likely one of Mao’s mistresses – a woman suspected of being Mao’s own granddaughter – has recently quit her job, moved into a luxury apartment, and, without any visible means of support, become a part of a new social set centered around the remnants of pre-Communist Shanghai society. What they fear is that, somehow, she has inherited some artifact or material related to Mao that will, when made public, prove embarrassing. Even though there is no evidence that such even exists, Chen has been charged to infiltrate her social circle, determine if the feared material exists and, if it does, retrieve it quietly. And in only a few days – because if he can’t resolve this ‘Mao case’ within the deadline, the party will resort to harsher, more deadly means. |
