The Filipino Martial Art of Kali, also known as Arnis and Escrima is one of the most beautiful and equally deadly arts in the world. It is primarily a weapons based system control with the use of knives, swords and fire-hardened wooden stick length of rattan poles, a lightweight but sturdy wood of a vine abundant in the Philippines. For this reason, Kali is also known as Filipino Stick Fighting and professional single or double use of sticks to disarm and take down opponents. The term is not used in the Philippines, where locals call the art Arnis, Arnis or Escrima hand. The term Kali used mainly outside the country in the U.S. or Europe.

Tradition, basic training in Kali and the Filipino Martial Arts have been simplified to facilitate the use of large groups and therefore are erroneously known as "simple" martial arts. By contrast, training beyond the basic level is relatively complicated and takes several years to master. Both men and women participated in Kali martial Arts Training. Filipino women have always been known to participate in wars and battles in Philippine history.

The famous explorer Ferdinand Magellan along with their Spanish conquerors were said to have been defeated by the Tribal Filipino skilled in the art of Kali. Sword and stick with armed natives led by Lapu-Lapu were able to route the invading forces despite the latter has the advantage of weapons and armor protection.

Although the Filipino people to be proud of Kali purely a martial art with origins in the Philippines, has influences from China, India, Arab missionaries and Spain. An offense-based system control, use the "good offense is the best defense" principle and are classified into two types of training: training stick to fight with swords and training to combat sword sticks. Basic training usually employs the use of either marriage or sticks a stick in one hand and a knife in the other, sword or dagger and sword and dagger. The movement more basic in the formation of Kali is the San Miguel or right up forehand strike. It is named after St. Michael the Archangel from paintings of him brandishing represent a sword in this position. Other movements are Abaniko or fan, or strike Redondo roundabout or stop the puny strike (with the gun, not a person on the back) and Paiwas hakbang (footwork to avoid) and hakbang tatsulok (triangular footwork).

Kali is different from other training courses that teach martial arts unarmed techniques with empty hands at the advanced levels of training rather than in the basic stages. The concept behind this is that guns are only a extension of the body and the same motion and footwork are used in both armed and unarmed combat. Holder with weapons in the early stages of training both automatically conditions of the body for unarmed combat as well.

In the mid 1940s after the Second World War, Filipino Kali masters migrated to States and it was not until years after Kali and the Filipino martial arts (FMA) were taught to foreigners.

The Life-Giving Sword (Paperback)

The legendary seventeenth-century swordsman Yagyu Munenori was the sword instructor and military and political adviser to two shoguns–and a great rival to Miyamoto Musashi. Despite his martial ability and his political power, Munenori`s life was spent immersed in Zen teachings. These teachings formed the framework for his deeply spiritual approach to sword fighting. Munenori saw in the practice of the sword a way to transform the student into a total human being. The Life-Giving Sword is Munenori`s manifesto on his approach. His central themes are the "life-giving sword"–the idea of controlling one`s opponent by spiritual readiness to fight rather than by actual fighting–and "No Sword," which is the idea that the mind must be free of everything, even the sword itself, in order to get to the place of complete mastery. Munenori`s ideas are applicable not only to martial arts but to business and human relations as well.

For millions of years, humans have gathered around the fire to keep warm. One enterprising early hominid stored his haunch of wildebeest too close to the flames, and came away with an unexpectedly juicy and delicious roast ‘beest. In subsequent attempts to replicate this magic “cooking” process, however, those cavemen tried holding the meat over the fire with their hands. Several debilitating burns later, they learned to hold the meat over the flames with green sticks. That’s using the old noodle! Later, as technology progressed, mankind was able to work metal into spits, and cooking technology leaped forward. However, mankind also progressed in weapons technology and that lovely metal was all used up for swords and knives. What they really needed was something that could do double-duty – a spit with which to roast their meat, and a foil with which to run their enemies through. Unfortunately, that advance wasn’t seen widely until the early 21st century, and the culinary arts consequently suffered. One only has to look at hardtack, Spam™, and “Freedom Fries” to know the truth of wartime food-suckage. Thankfully, we now have a 19″ long skewer designed to punch holes in your enemy’s armor as well as fit up to four large marshmallows on double-tongs! Rejoice, ye violent gourmands! Now you don’t have to choose between seeing your enemies flee before you, and roasting the perfect weenie.
