Much has been said about our generators of wind power in recent years. Initially conceived as a response to the crisis the worlds of energy, we soon realized how many turbines, and the large amount of space you really need for energy in the world.

People are up in arms about wind turbines ruining scenic vistas, and environmentalists are worried about birds getting caught in the blades. But what if there a solution? An idea so revolutionary that it's hard to imagine …

It seems there. Even Time magazine named him one of the best inventions of 2008. It's called the "Flying Electric Generator".

So what is it?

The FEG is a type of "helicopter" that hangs over the land and generates energy from the strong winds aloft. But the surprising thing is that is lifted by the wind. To avoid flying, is tied to land, which the electric current is sent back to earth.

As the elevators FEG, reaching top winds, enabling it to produce more energy. In fact, it is said that these high altitude winds or jet streams are so strong that the use of only 1% of them could power the entire planet.

Next plan to test a larger helicopter at 240kW at up to 15,000 feet tied and then further expand the FEG, with four rotors, capable of producing megawatts of ten to forty energy – which is much higher than the current capacity of five megawatts of wind turbines.

People have had doubts about how there is lightning or turbulence at high altitude could affect the FEG. By lightning warning system is in place where the FEG is simply brought to earth. Turbulence is not a problem since the helicopter acts much like a comet, and simply return to the way it was after a big gust of wind. And a combination of GPS and gyro is used to control of pitch and roll.

So, how much energy production is possible?

According to the company Headquartered in San Diego, Sky WindPower Corporation, a matrix of 600 FEG nominal 20 MW and is operated in an area of land of 200 square kilometers could produce more than three times more megawatt hours for many years as the 28,572,902 MWh produced by the plant de Palos Verde nuclear Arizona in 2003.

And only 43 of these matrices operating FEG at 85% capacity could produce up to 3,883,185,000 MWh of energy – which is the total energy consumption in the U.S. in 2003.

And how Cost us this much power?

According to a study conducted by Sky WindPower careful Corp in the time interval that the cost of the FEG ten megawatts of capacity would be less than 2 cents per kilowatt hour (including the costs of land use). This is less than the costs of fossil fuel energy. But obviously siting and proximity to existing power lines are very important factors.

What next?

Since the FEG are still in the testing phase, are not quite sure how long it will take before seeing any floating in the distance. But one thing is sure if everything goes as planned, we can see in the air wind power generators on the planet.
