A microwave power meter is an instrument that measures the electrical power that occur at microwave frequencies.
Generally, a microwave power meter consists of a measuring head containing the real power sensor element connected via a cable to the meter, which reports the power reading. The head may also be referred to as a power sensor or assembly. Different power sensors can be used for different frequencies or power levels. Historically, sensor operating means more power tube combinations is that the sensor could convert microwave power into an analog voltage which then reads the meter and converted in a power reading. Several sensor heads can contain modern electronics to create a digital output and can be connected via USB to a PC that acts as the power meter.
Microwave power meters with large bandwidth – which is frequency nonselective. To measure the power of a specific frequency component in the presence of other signals at different frequencies of a spectrum analyzer or measuring receiver is necessary.
Sensor Technologies
There are a variety of different technologies that have been used as power sensing element. Each has pros and cons.
Thermal
Thermocouple power sensors make up the majority of thermal power sensors sold today, they are usually fairly linear and a reasonably fast response time and dynamic range. The power microwave is absorbed in a load and the temperature rise of this is measured by the thermocouple. Thermocouples often require a referral or DC power source for calibrating microwave before the measurement and these can be incorporated into the power meters. Sensors Thermistor based energy as the Agilent 8478B are generally only used in situations where excellent linearity is important, since both are much slower and have less dynamic range than any of thermocouple or diode-based sensors. Other technologies Thermal detection include calorimeters and bolometers microwave and quasi-optical pulsed microwave sensors.
Diode
Many microwave power heads using one or more LED (s) to correct the incident microwave power, therefore, these power sensors usually have extremely fast response times. The diode used in its generally square law and thus give an output voltage proportional to the incident RF power. In order to extend its dynamic range Beyond the square of the correction of the law of linearity or multiple stacks of diodes are used. Although this diode sensors generally have poor linearity and can be inaccurate when measuring modulated signals and as thermocouple sensors often require a source of reference.
Force Field
Other technologies have been investigated or applied for use as power sensors, but are not widely used today, these include the pair of blades, electron beam, MEMS, and Hall effect sensors based on atomic fountain.
Display
