Most cases of molluscum will clear naturally within two years. While the skin growths are present, there is a possibility of transmitting infection to another person. When the growths are gone, it ends the possibility of spread of infection.
Unlike herpes viruses, which can lie dormant in the body for months or years before reappearing, molluscum contagiosum not remain in the body when the growths are gone from the skin and will not appear alone. However, there is no permanent immunity to the virus and may become infected again with exposure to an infected person.

For mild cases, over-the-counter medications to the wart such as salicylic acid may or may not shorten the duration of infection. Journal topical application of tretinoin cream may also trigger resolution. These treatments require several months for the infection to clear, and are often associated with severe inflammation and possibly discomfort.
Doctors sometimes prescribe imiquimod, the optimal timing for use is not yet been established. Imiquimod is a form of immunotherapy. Immunotherapy triggers your immune system to fight the virus that causes the skin growth. Imiquimod is applied 3 times a week, left on the skin for 6 to 10 hours and then removed. A cure can last from 4 to 16 weeks. Small studies have indicated that it succeeds about 80% of the time.
Application of tape over the lesions until they begin to crust over and heal is well tolerated, has been effective, and can be implemented easily at home with materials available. The ribbon is cut to the size of the lesions and apply after washing or previously applied tape when it falls. This treatment for molluscum was motivated by the successful treatment of warts similarly. The findings of a controlled study that duct tape occlusion therapy was significantly more effective than cryotherapy for the treatment of common wart.
Surgical treatments include cryosurgery, which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy lesions, as well as scraping them with a curette. Application of liquid nitrogen may cause burning or itching at the treatment site, which can persist for few minutes after treatment. Scarring or loss of color can complicate both these treatments. With liquid nitrogen, can cause blisters in the treatment site, but will be moved in two to four weeks.
Although its use is banned by the FDA in the United States in its pure, undiluted, currently cantharidin blistering agent can be effective. It should be noted that cryosurgery and curette scraping are not painless procedures. They may also leave permanent scars or marks on white (depigmentation).
Pulsed dye laser therapy for molluscum contagiosum may be the treatment of choice for multiple lesions in a patient cooperation. The use of pulsed dye laser for treatment of MC has been documented with excellent results. The treatment was well tolerated, without scars or pigmentation anomalies. The lesions resolved without scarring within 2 weeks. Studies show a 96% -99% of lesions resolved with treatment.
The pulsed dye laser is quick and efficient, but its expense makes it less profitable than other options. Moreover, not all dermatology offices have this 585nm laser. It is important to remember that the elimination of visible shock does not cure the disease. The virus is found in the skin and new bumps often appear over a year until the body mounts an effective immune response against the virus. Thus any surgical treatment may need to be repeated each time new crops of lesions occur.
